Knossos-Heraklion

All the history of Crete is found in this jewel monument of cultural heritage. The Minoan palace of Knossos welcomes and introduces you to the celebrated past of the island. Walk around the “golden” premises of Kind Minos and enjoy one of the most magnificent samples of Minoan civilization, that flourished from 1700 to 1450 b.C. Knossos was located by Minoas Kalokerinos in 1878 and in 1900 Sir Arthur Evans started the first excavations in the area. The excavations continued for 30 to 35 years, revealing a large section of the Minoan city and the graveyards. The aura of this area will surprise you and time is counted in a different manner through myths, such the one of the Minotaur, as well as by signs of the glorious past, spread wherever the eye can see; by the remarkable sizes, the architecture, the innovative building techniques, the luxurious materials at the time, the art and philosophy of one of the greatest civilizations of all times. During the day, a visit to Heraklion will give you the opportunity to get to know the capital city of the island, to taste traditional dishes as well as to shop around in the picturesque open market right at the centre of the city.
